"newsroom" starts now. good morning, thank you so much for being with us. i'm carol costello. we begin with a bit of breaking news, lance armstrong takes another hit as the international olympic committee strips him of his bronze medal. he took third place in the men's road cycle individual time trial at the 2000 olympics in sidney, australia. the ioc is asking armstrong to return the medal. the disgraced cyclist competed

in the 1996 games in atlanta. the doping scandal that now surrounds armstrong could bring down the sport of cycling in olympic games. cycling may be pulled from the games if the scandal implicating top cycling officials inside the international cycling union, the sports' governing body. more on armstrong's latest trouble in a live report from austin, texas. to another developing story this morning in north africa, in algeria, where the fate of several americans remains unknown. they were taken hostage yesterday during an attack by islamic militants. happened at a gas field owned partly by bp. two people have been killed, and there are reports this morning that some of those hostages have escaped. defense secretary leanne pa net leon panetta not mincing words. >> by all indication this is is a terrorist act and the united states strongly condemns these

kinds of terrorist acts. it is a very serious matter when americans are taken hostage along with others. >> cnn's dan rivers is in london. dan, there are so many different stories going around that the compound was attacked by the algerian military, that some of the hostages escaped, including one american. what are you hearing? >> well, i'm afraid it is a very confusing picture. the latest line we have from the british foreign office here in london confirming that the algerians have told them that there is an ongoing operation at this gas field suggesting that perhaps some sort of effort to go in. we know from the ministry of information in algeria they surrounded the terrorists with the hostages at the gas field, the troops were there. this sounds like they have gone in. there were widespread reports that helicopters were being used to attack the terrorist

positions. now, the algerian foreign minister is clear on that saying the use of helicopters is wrong, it's a fantasy was their quote on that. in terms of the number of people that are being held hostage, we don't really have a clear idea, i'm afraid. the initial reports from the ministry of information in algeria were that about 20, not more than 20 people were ambushed on their way to the airport. they went back to the gas field plant, they were taken hostage by these terrorists who then holed up in part of the plant. they were then surrounded by algerian forces. there have been numerous conflicting reports that some of the hostages had escaped, some of the algerians held in there escaped, some have been killed. we've got no clarity at all, no official confirmation from any of the governments involved as to the exact number of people being held more how many are still being held still hostage and whether any of them have definitely been killed as part

of this operation. >> we'll let you get back to it, hopefully you can bring us more information later in "the newsroom." dan rivers reporting live. there are new questions about notre dame football star manti te'o and the girlfriend who was nothing more than an internet fabrication. who is the real victim of this hoax? is it te'o, one of the best college football players in the country or the nation's sports fans who feel duped by the tearful stories of her death. >> i cried, i yelled, i never felt that way before. this is six hours ago i just found out my grandma passed away and you take, you know, the love of my life. last thing she said to me was "i love you," and that was it. >> cnn's ted rowlands is peeling back the layers of this bizarre and rifting story. we are reporting we'll hear from

te'o himself today. what have you heard? >> reporter: folks here at notre dame expect him to speak sometime over the next few days. we've talked to or reached out to his agents and nothing specific as to when or where some sort of media availability will take place or what it will be. will it be just one interview with somebody or will it be an actual press conference, we don't know. bottom line, there are a lot of questions, carol, this morning, on this story. we know one thing, the university of notre dame is absolutely standing by their star football player. university of note recamenotre athletic director is convinced te'o was the victim of an elaborate hoax. >> the thing i am most sad of, sad about is -- sorry -- that

the single most trusting human being we ever met we'll never be able to trust again in his life. >> reporter: enduring the death of his girlfriend and grandmother on the same day transcended sports. people around the world were touched by how in love te'o seemed to be with lennay kaekua the girl he called his soul mate. >> i cried, i yelled, i never felt that way before. this is six hours ago i just found out my grandma passed away and you take, you know, the love of my life. >> reporter: on the day of his girlfriend's supposed funeral, te'o played football, after the game, notre dame's football coach, brian kelly awarded the game ball to the girl we now know doesn't exist. >> i want to award this game ball to lennay, and i'd like man

t ma manti to have the ball to take back to hawaii. >> reporter: notre dame kept the truth under facts despite the fact the media was still telling the story leading up to the national championship game. >> from the outset we established a parameter that was manti's story to tell. we wanted to know at the appropriate time when it would be told but that it was his to tell. >> many people, including one of the reporters that broke the hoax story doesn't think te'o's story adds up. >> te'o's story he's completely innocent in this doesn't shake through with us. >> reporter: what still isn't clear is why didn't manti te'o ever mention he'd never actually met lennay when talking about how much he loved her? how did the story about how they first met at a football game start, and if it wasn't true, why didn't he correct it, and how could he have been so in love with someone he'd never actually met face to face?

>> i think as manti tells his story you'll see the same thing i saw, that it does fully line up. >> reporter: and manti te'o released a statement. in the statement he says the relationship that he had with this girl was completely online, and over the phone, and he says that he is the victim of a sick joke. carol? >> unbelievable story, ted rowlands reporting live for thus morning. no matter what you believe or who you don't, the case underscores an ugly truth. people you meet online are often not who they claim to be. school barack obama did and heisman trophy, and played for notre dame, he's for lack of a better term our guy here. >> do you think sports writers across the nation were duped by him, by his friendly, lovely persona? >> i think that's part of it, and i think that people just really fell in love with the story because it was notre dame, he's different, he's one of the few polynesians who have ever attended notre dame, he is an outstanding player and it is true that he was a good leader on that team and brought that team together and helped to go to 12-0. now, how much of that might have been inspired by what might be a fake story or has definite

elements of being fake, you can't really quantify that but it could have been a factor. football is a very emotional game, and players and teams get energy from emotional issues. >> they certainly do. sportsman for the "honolulu star advertiser" dave reardon thank you for joining us >> thanks for having me. let's go back to the trouble surrounding lance armstrong. an hour ago the international olympic committee stripped the cyclist of his 2000 bronze medal, comes hours before we finally hear his admission to using performance-enhancing drugs. his two-and a half hour interview with oprah winfrey will be shown over the next two nights. george howell joins from us armstrong's home of austin, texas, good morning. >> reporter: carol, good morning. the loss of this medal is a big deal, it means the international olympic committee, they've looked over the information and as they see it, they decided to

take action, but really, carol, this is just the tip of the iceberg, when you think about the implications first of all this has on cycling, the international olympic committee according to one member may consider taking cycling out of the summer games once or twice, that's a big deal for cyclists who would like to be part of the olympics, not to mention for lance armstrong there will be lawsuits, depending on what he says, how he says it, there will be groups, sponsors that could decide to file suit against lance armstrong, could mean he loses a lot of money. think about this, he already may be in talks according to reports with the u.s. postal service about how much money he will pay back of that $30 million some that they sponsored him for. there is a loss of money there and he's also lost sponsored. he lost nike, anheuser-busch, these are big sponsors, big losses for him. here in austin when you talk to people, this is his hometown, i

know how important this city is to him and how big he was, has been to this city. there's a real mixed opinion about lance. some people see him as a hero for what he's done for cancer but many people see him as sort of a fraud or a villain. so it's really a loss of reputation as well and again, carol, we haven't heard exactly what he will say, how he will say it but we're seeing some agencies taking action, given what they expect to happen later today. >> george haul lorpg riff from austin, texas, this morning. the government releasing some key economic data, weekly jobless claims dropped by 37,000 last week, that's well below estimates and also a five-year low. also some good news in housing, housing starts for december surged 12%, staying with your money, the hits keep coming for boeing's dreamliner, the faa orders 787 dreamliners in the united states to remain on the tarmac, they grounded them. aviation authorities around the world are following suit.

alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange with boeing's coming financial woes because i don't think it can help it at this point. >> right now what it is bad news for boeing in the short term, carol, you look at what the stock did. investors are taking it on the chin, the stock taking a hit yesterday on this news that all nippon airways and japan airlines grounded its dreamliners. now shares of boeing are down 2% in the premarket so that's piling on that sort of taken on the chin effect. this is really the biggest setback for the new planes that began flying back in late 2001, but this is a plane that's really endured plenty of issues before. aviation experts believe the long-term fallout is limited. boeing says they are confident the 787 is safe and saying we stand behind its overall integrity. we will be taking every

necessary step in the coming days to assure our customers and the traveling public of the 787's safety and to return the air planes to service. all of the dreamliners, carol, that were in service, all 50 of them are no longer flying. boeing has over 800 firm orders for the dreamliner from various airlines. british airways is expecting to get its first dreamliner later this year. it issued a statement saying they remain committed to taking delivery of their first boeing 787 earlier this year. that's good news for boeing. >> alison kosik reporting live for the new york stock exchange. lebron james adds to his legend, last night he was the youngest nba player to reach 20,000 points in trademark fashion with a pullup jumper against golden state. at 28 days and 17 years old he beat kobe bryant's previous record by more than a year. he recorded his 5,000th career assist during the game, else'

good morning. i'm carol costello. stories we're watching right now in "the newsroom" at 30 minutes past the hour, wall street preparing to open for the trading day. futures are indicating a slightly higher open. investigators watching economic reports including the positive housing data that came out earlier today and work corporate earnings. speaking of earnings a big miss for citigroup as the bank reported it brought in $2.2 billion in the fourth quarter, that number is actually well below estimates. bank of america, though, stopped industry estimates with $36 million last quarter. the bank did get dinged by the $12 billion settlement with

fannie mae over faulty home lones. president obama directed b. todd jones to be the secretary of the atf. the senate hasn't confirmed a permanent atf director in years. strengthening the atf is part president obama's new gun regulation plan. mark sanford is running for his old seat. his extramarital affair became public in 2009. sanford says he deserves a second chance. >> u.s. senators retire every 1,000 years or something. he retires, the governor happens to pick the guy who was in the seat that i used to hold and so there's been these strange opening of doors and i don't know exactly what it means but we'll find out in nine weeks. >> you can hear more from mark

[ speaking in french ] "when is it?" they are going to try to watch online but most people say they just want him to go away, they want the story to die down but they don't really care about the oprah interview. carol? >> what about the tour de france, is it affecting that, i'm sure it's affecting that race. what do they say about that? >> reporter: well, they feel at some point the integrity of the tour de france, though it's been shattered for now, because of the whole armstrong debackle that down the road they hope the image will be restored. people i talked to said it doesn't matter how much armstrong confesses or apologizes. the damage has been done. i was at the eiffel tower and talked to a bunch of people, he's just human. people make mistakes so there was much more sympathy than i expected there would be from so many people here i talked to. there was one person that said that he sympathizes with lance armstrong and said look, the

30 minutes past the hour. month after the newtown shooting massacre president obama signed 19 executive actions aimed at reducing gun violence, some would need congressional approval, others would not. they include a universal background check on all gun sales, making federal rules for returning seized guns to their owners, reviewing federal safety standards for gun locks and safes, directing the centers for disease control to study gun violence, and clarifying that the affordable care act does not bar doctors from asking their patients about guns in their homes. sounds like a whole lot of bureaucracy, right? kentucky senator rand paul tells fox news that if the president signs these executive actions, he'll be acting like a king and paul wants congress to walk them back. >> do we have a bill we're going to introduce early next week and in this bill we will nullify anything the president does that smacks of legislation, and there are several of the executive orders that appear as if he's

writing new law, that cannot happen. we struck down once, the court struck clinton down for trying this, and i'm afraid that president obama may have this king complex sort of developing and we're going to make sure that it doesn't happen. >> paul didn't specify which of the executive actions he thinks ought to be enacted rather by congress, or what other king-like actions the president might be considering. the president's top lieutenant of the gun control debate will address several hundred mayors about the issues and he'll do that in washington today. vice president joe biden said to speak at the u.s. conference of mayors just about four hours from now, when that happens, cnn will bring it to you live. the president of that group, that mayor's group is philadelphia mayor michael nutter. he's a big obama supporter and during an appearance before a u.s. house committee nutter slammed the nra for this ad that criticizes the president for not wanting to put armed guards in schools while his own daughters get secret service protection. mayor nutter joins me now from

washington. welcome, mr. mayor. >> good morning, carol, how are you? >> what did you object to in that nra ad? >> for those of us in the political business, generally it's been pretty much an unwritten but understood rule that family and children are out of bounds, that you don't attack someone's family, if you want to attack the candidate or the elected official, certainly that's your prerogative but generally family has been considered off limits, and that doesn't add anything to legitimate dialogue that really needs to take place on the issues of public safety and gun regulations. >> although some people are also criticizing president obama for surrounding himself with children, when he held his news conference on his gun control plans yesterday. should children be used in that instance? >> i don't think those children were "used." they were there at an event, they wrote letters to the

president. he talked about the letters that they wrote. they're very concerned that something as horrific as newtown, connecticut, or things that happened on the streets in philadelphia, chicago, new york, washington, any city in america, could possibly happen to them, and i thought the president gave them a voice in this conversation. often the adults seem to forget that children care about these issues as well. >> but you know, some might argue that the children didn't actually need to be present, perhaps the reading of the letters would have been enough. >> you know, some might argue whatever they want to argue. the children were there, it was a very powerful experience yesterday. i was there. it was more than appropriate. >> just this week you announced an interesting plan to put financial pressure on gunmakers and sellers by putting requirements on companies that would invest in your city's pension funds. tell me how that would work. >> actually it's kind of the other way around, and it really

is about providing a more proactive and progressive method of engaging with the gun manufacturers and distributors, retailers, that you have a certain standard of business practices and so we want to encourage what i'm trying to encourage is changes in some of their policies or standards or the way they operate, that they might actually invest more in what some call the smart gun technology, technology in the hands for guns and ammunition, they support the universal background check system that we make sure that those who should not have firearms, whether it's children, unless they're authorized or those with mental health challenges, again, unless authorized or criminals, domestic or international terrorists do not get guns in their hands. this is really more about corporate policy, corporate good behavior and in some instances cities like mine and many

others, our pension funds make investments in a wide variety of areas, directly or indirectly in companies that are related to the gun industry, and those who would be in compliance we would continue to support. >> let's say if walmart wanted to invest in your pension fund, would you say well before you can do that, you have to agree to these specific things concerning guns. >> i was going to explain it goes the other way. walmart doesn't invest in us, we are the investor in them. >> got you, sorry about that. >> it's okay. we would say like a better business bureau, corporate practices, these are the kinds of things we'd like to you adhere to. they have actually updated their own policies often in the aftermath of these horrific incidents. if they were to comply, fine, if not, certainly we would explore our various options as it relates to how we invest our public dollars in a variety of companies. >> mayor nutter, thank you so much for being with us this

47 minutes past the hour. time to check our top stories. north africa the fate of several americans remains unknown. there's an ongoing hostage situation happening there, that's all we know. islamic militants have taken responsibility for seizing westerners in yesterday's attack at a remote gas plant partly owned by bp. it's believed three americans are being held oesage there. a theater in aurora, colorado, opens tonight, it will start with a night of remembrance. the governor of colorado and the mayor of aurora are expected to speak. officials say this is a way of moving forward, but some victim's families say the theater is being insensitive, they're boycotting the event. boeing's newest plane grounded, government aviation authorities in the united

states, europe, japan and india will not allow the 787 dreamliners to fly until a fire risk involving the plane's batteries is fixed. several air carriers had various problems with their 787 jets over the past ten days. the government is announcing new rules for mortgage providers today, aimed at protecting you homeowners who are facing foreclosure but some consumer groups say the new regulations don't go far enough. alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. tell us more. >> these consumer advocates, coral, what they wanted to see was these rules sort of go one step further and force banks to lower rates on loans or have banks postpone foreclosure, but the new rules for the consumer financial protection bureau they should prevent foreclosures happening too quickly or unnecessarily. some of the highlights they'll give borrowers time to modify their loans. banks don't begin the foreclosure process if the borrower is in the middle of

trying to get a loan modification and borrowers have to be delinquent for four months before banks can file the first foreclosure notice. the rules are trying to make foreclosure the last trying to other options first. these new rules force barvegs to actually make some employee available to help homeowners avoid foreclosure on their home and call for clear mortgage statements. again, you know, it's all about avoiding these unnecessary foreclosures and giving delinquent homeowners a chance to get back on track. so many times these banks have been quick on the trigger. they are saying let's hit the pause button before they kick everybody out of their homes. >> alison kosik live from the new york stock exchange. talk back question is, why do we cheat? facebook.com/carol.

between two buildings as rescuers tried to cut through a wall to get her out. she was apparently on this second floor roof, often used as a smoking area when king heard her yelling for help at 3:30 in the morning. >> she's climbing on the wall. why are you climbing on the wall at this time anyway. >> reporter: falls between the exterior walls of the two building. firemen pulled down a section of wall and inserted air bags to widen the space. >> they are using that bottle there and that's luke can't to try to make her more slippery. >> reporter: rescuers estimate the space she was in measured a mere eight inches or so. >> she wouldn't turn her head but she could breathe. >> reporter: about 3 1/2 hours into the ordeal, kptv revealed good news. >> oh, i see her hand. i believe i see her hand with a glove. >> reporter: at one point there

were two rescuers in the hole. lieutenant rick chapman is the one that she talked to. >> mainly that she was cold. she was in good spirit the whole time, a real trooper. >> reporter: he used siz sors to pull and tug and body part by body part she emerged. it looked like a birth. >> she was relieved. she was pushing and trying to get her hand out. >> when she got that last foot, he sh looked over and said, i'm coming out. >> and she's out. >> reporter: delivered to safety after four hours. her husband was on hand and he delivered a couple of kisses before he was wheeled off. her glasses survived the fall so at least this wallflower could see the jam that she was in. is that the sound of rescue equipment or the thump of her heart? jeanne moos, cnn, new york.

is a far ree. this is cnn breaking news. >> all right. we have breaking news to report on that hostage situation in algeria. militants kidnapped up to 27 people, workers for the natural gas company, bp. we believe that three americans were held hostage. at some point today, the algerian military raided the kidnappers compound, wherever they were holding them hostage, and the algeria state-run television station is reporting that four hostages have been freed. two british citizens, one french citizen, and one kenyan citizen. they say nothing about the americans being held captive but they do say there are a number of casualties. pentagon correspondent chris lawrence is with me to tell us more. what were you able to find out, chris? >> that it's simply a chaotic

situation. that's how it was described during an interview. officials in both the state department and the pentagon say it is very, very difficult to get a handle exactly on what is going on. they know that an operations ongoing by the algerian security forces but as to the numbers of dead, of wounded, how many kidnappers there are still in there, how many hostages, especially american hostages are still left in there, all of that really is in flux and i would really be hesitant to try to get pinned down on specifics at this point. from all accounts of everything that we've heard, the situation is very fluid and chaotic right now. >> i know you're going to keep an eye on it. if you find out anything else, please tell us. chris lawrence reporting live for us this morning. now what may be the most shocking death of someone who never existed, new questions about notre dame football star man

manti te'o. who's the real victim of this hoax? te'o or those that feel duped? >> the most beautiful girl that i've ever met. not because of her physical beauty but the beauty of her character and who she is. she was just the person that i turned to. >> cnn ted rowlands is covering this riveting story. any worth on hearing from ta you today. >> reporter: the university is under the assumption that he will come forward and speak somehow in the few days. nothing in terms of details, what is he going to do, a single

his soul mate. >> six hours ago i found out my grandmother passed away and you take the love of my life. >> reporter: on the day of his girlfriend's sposed funeral, te'o played football. after the game, brian kelly actually awarded the game ball to the girl we now know doesn't exist. >> we now award this ball to lennay and i'd like manti to have this ball to take away. >> reporter: notre dame kept the truth under wraps despite the fact that the media was still telling the story. >> from the outset, we established a parameter that this was manti's story to tell. we it was his to tell. >> reporter: many people in including one of the reporters who broke the hoax story doesn't think te'o's story doesn't added

a up. >> he's completely innocent. >> reporter: what still isn't clear, is why didn't manti te'o ever mention that he never met lennay when he talked about her, and if it wasn't true, why didn't he correct it? and how could he have been so in love with someone he had never actually met face-to-face? >> you know, i think as manti tells the story, you'll see the same thing that i saw, that it does fully line up. >> reporter: manti te'o has released a statement. a portion of that statement reads, talking about his girlfriend, we maintained what i thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone and i grew to care deeply about her. to realize that i was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

carol, the bottom line here, there are still a lot of questions that people have for man tie te'o. >> so many questions. ted rowlands reporting live for us this morning. in half an hour, we'll speak with a sports journalist. the teammate says te'o lied but the media blew that up. more trouble around lance armstrong. stripped from his bronze medal, he took third place in the individual time trial at the 200 olympics in sydney, australia. the ioc is asking him to return that medal. he's completed in three olympic games. this comes hours before we finally hear lance armstrong's reported admission to using performance enhancing drugs. the 2 1/2 hour interview will be shown over the next two nights.

peter flax is editor-in-chief of bicycling magazine. how are you? >> good morning. i'm okay. at least lance can feel like he has the second strangest sports story of the day. >> i never thought anything could outshadow the lance armstrong story but i was wrong. >> it's a strange day. >> lance armstrong has been asked to give back his bronze medal. do you suppose that the olympic committee will say eventually give back all of your medals? >> i think this is the only olympic medal he will have to give back although he competed in multiple games. i think there is the only one that they are going to ask for and one of the ironies, the man who got the silver medal and the person who came in fourth who presumably would get bronze are already people who have been convicted or implicated in

doping scandals. so the whole thing is is pretty messy. >> wow. so there is a real possibility that cycling may be dropped as an olympic sport, at least for a time? >> that's one i find hard to believe. it seems like today's amateur athletes that are much cleaner than the athletes that were in lance armstrong's time isn't the solution and i suspect they will work something out and set it up. >> what do up want to hear tonight when you sit down and watch armstrong's interview? >> i think a lot of the little details of when he makes admissions and when he acknowledges the collateral damage he caused to people who were close to him and how earnest he seems about, you know, it must be an enormous struggle for him to stand in front of oprah and the nation and explain what he did but a lot of the little details of whether he can actually say sorry, whether he can actually see like he fathoms the problems he caused. you know, that's the stuff i'll

be looking for. >> you love the sport of cycling. you've built your life around the sport of cycling. aren't you angry? >> oh, sure. sure. there's so many emotions happening at once for people that are in love with the sport. you know, it's a heartbreaking moment to see the person that's widely thought of as the greatest american cyclist of all time having to go before oprah and breakdown and cry to admit sins that a lot of us already knew for years that he had committed. so it's a strange night for sure. >> peter flax, editor-in-chief of "cycling" magazine, thanks for being here. >> good to be here. >> cheating athletes, americans, i'll take a closer look at why we cheat. it's our talk back question today. and today at 3:00 p.m. eastern, a special report, the

psychology and science behind cheating. join brooke baldwin right here on cnn. the overall death right from cancer in the united states has dropped 20% from more than 20 years ago. this new report coming from the american cancer society. that means nearly 1.2 million cancer deaths have been prevented in that time. the report also projects there will be 1.6 million new cancer cases this year. but overall cancer cases are declining for most types of cancer. what does this all mean? with me now is chief medical officer and executive vice president of the american cancer society. welcome, doctor. >> hello. how are you? >> so these figures, they are just released this morning and you must be feeling good. >> this is really good news. you can look at survival by the number of people getting cancer

a you can see, since survival is increasing we must be doing something well but you can also debate that. nobody can debate it when the number of people dying is actually going down. 1.2 million people alive today that wouldn't have gotten cancer. >> what type of cancer are we talking about? >> most cancers, especially the big ones. half of all people who get cancer get lung cancer, pancreas cancer, or breast cancer. they are all going down. they are all going down by more than 30%, as a matter of fact. >> wow. so is it that fewer people are getting those types of cancer or is it just we've advanced so far in medical technology that we're able to take care of them? >> in the case of long and colorectal cancer, it's going down. lung cancer is going down because the smoking cessation

from the '50s and 60s is actually going down by now. finding polyps before they become cancer. in other diseases such as breast and prostate cancer, it's very likely that we have improvements in early detection as well as in how we treat the disease. >> still a long way to go? >> there's a lot we can still do. the report actually shows that we can save a lot more lives if we simply started doing what we know we should be doing. >> and just give us one simple example. >> we need to start fighting obesity epidemic. obesity causes cancer as well as cardiovascular disease. i cannot leave without saying that 20% of americans still smoke. >> it's so unnecessary. >> there is no such thing as legitimate use of tobacco. >> doctor, thanks so much for being with us. we appreciate it. >> thank you.

17 minutes past the hour. time to check the top stories. the nightmare continues for boeing for the 787 dreamliner. it's been ordered to stay on the tarmac. planes will not be cleared for takeoff until there is proof that the lithium batteries are safe. a new jersey boardwalk damaged by superstorm sandy will soon be back to its former glory. the $3.6 million deal has been

not after sandy hook. kids stood behind the president as he unveiled his gun control proposals. those who propose any gun regulations were incensed by that. rush limbaugh calling those children, in his words, human shields. and the reaction from rick perry wasn't much better. perry said in part, the piling on by the political left and their cohorts in the media to use a pre-existing political agenda that would not have saved those children disgusts me. the nra, too, specifically the president's children, to illustrate what he calls elitist hypocrisy. the obama administration called that repug nant and cowardly. maria kor don't na and will cane are joining us. welcome to both of you. >> thank you, carol. >> maria, the president highlighted one little girl in

particular. her name is julia stokes. she's 7 years old. she wrote this moving letter telling the she was afraid to lose her brother and sisters and rush limbaugh mocked her and the other children in attendance. >> i've been watching the children as human shields show that is now going on at the white house. boy, these guys are somber. biden was very somber. would have thought -- i've worked with this guy 27 hours a day. president barack obama. yay. the kids cheer. the president starts reading letters from the kids, got to do what the kids want, got to answer all of the letters from santa claus. got to do everything they want. but it is -- it's stunning. you look at what's happening in

the country. >> should kids be in a position to be mocked, maria? >> certainly i agree that limbaugh is limbaugh and no matter what president obama does, he's going to be against it. let's put that out front. i think we need to be very careful about using kids in politics and to seemingly advance a political agenda like rush limbaugh said. but let's also keep in mind that this event that happened in newtown happened to children. it's a very defining event in the collective soul and consciousness, not just of adults but of our children, carol. what parent in this country did not have to sit down with their children and i think will agrees with me on this point, to explain to them what happened. he's got kids. i've got kids. everybody with kids had to explain to them what happened. if my children then said to me,

well, i would like to write president obama, whoever the president might be at the time, to tell them what i think and what i'm feeling, i would be absolutely okay with that. if the parents are okay with having their children be voices for, frankly, a group of americans who hardly ever do have voices, i am absolutely fine with that. if the parents are okay with that, i think it should be okay. >> this isn't the first time president obama has included children in a milestone moment. in 2010 the president signed his health care bill into law with an 11-year-old boy by his side. that boy's mother died without health insurance. will, in this case was that appropriate? >> no. i cannot find an ounce of appropriateness. i find it despicable. this is why. it's part of a larger narrative which president obama explicitly stated yesterday and impuning the motives. it's draping yourself in the emotionalness of the debate. avoiding the policy debate and

impuning others. he said that there will be others that say they are doing it for money. for anyone that doesn't care about these children, only out here to be a mouthpiece of the nra or to seek some kind of money, it is showing, in the end -- this is what it shows, the inherent intellectual weakness in the argument being put forward. the inherent policy weakness of what is being suggested. just deal with it in a rational level. >> okay. so we're talking about dealing with this in an intellectual way, the nra ad using obama's children to make a point. maria in. >> to use will's word, that is absolutely despicable. the children of president, the spouses of presidents,

president's families are off limits and so i think the majority of americans believe that ad was absolutely d despicable. i think bringing into this the effect that this event had on children is something that we have to think about. and, frankly, majority of americans, including gun owners, believe that we do have to do more in term of sensible regulations and making sure that we do anything and everything that we can for this not to happen again and a lot of opponents, not even all republicans or nra members because that's not the case, a lot of the opponents for any measure here are going to be using that argument that it is a weak intellectual argument. no. let's talk about what can be done, if anything can be done. we should be doing it to keep this from happening again. >> and will, you know, i've never objected to a little

emotion and argument. you kind of needy motion to get the argument going, to get people talking about it. because not everybody wants to. >> no. you know, you and i had that debate recently, carol. i don't feel like emotion has place in a debate because emotion doesn't encourage debate. it shuts it down. it's quick emotional reactions. i don't see any room in a debate for us to endulg our most base of emotions. when the president is doing that, he's encouraging you to feel your way through this debate, not think. every one of these proposals, i've talked to you about them and others, if you had a magic wand and waved in everything that was proposed yesterday, you are not going to positively affect gun violence in the united states. >> that's absolutely not true. because some of the proposals -- >> we'll have to come back another day. i've got to wrap it up. thank you so much for the interesting conversation today. a notre dame teammate of

saw it on the news themselves and that was a turning point for them. >> didn't they find it strange all along that they never saw this woman? >> they said that they knew that he had met her one time which alludes to the time that manti says that he met her after a stanford game in palo alto. so they just took his word for it. this is the star of your team, he's a senior. why wouldn't you believe someone that you spend so much time with. their ears perked up, it was one coincidence after another and it seemed is suspicious to them. >> the university conducts this big investigation. it claims that it knew about all of this on, what, december 26th? the heisman trophy was awarded on december 7th. you know what these people are saying, this guy came in second and that he supposedly let this story go on and on, even when he knew that this woman didn't exist to create sympathy for the

heisman voters. do you think that's possible? >> i mean, i think to most rational people, no. that's not possible and it's not logical but there are all types of weird motivations for people out there and this player i spoke with did give manti the benefit of the doubt and thinks originally his teammate was scammed by somebody pretending to be this woman online, pretending to die, et cetera, et cetera but he doesn't know when manti knew but knows that he perpetuated the lie at some point during this whole ordeal and it's sad to think that someone would do that for sympathy for a heisman trophy. as bad as this is, the only person manti hurt was him himself and his teammates. good thing he didn't win the heisman. >> just in fairness to him, i might not come out publicly and

say, i was in love with a woman that never existed. that would be embarrassing. maybe it's as simple as that. >> a lot of people are embarrassed to say they met someone online and especially if you are living this lie and you feel deceived. somebody asked me, how could he have faked those emotions if this was a lie and the only plausible explanation i could think of was that if he did feel like he had been duped, then maybe he really did suffer a loss, not the kind of loss he was leading the public to believe but emotionally if you lose someone who you thought you were in love with, you lose them whether they never existed in the first place. i think that is aossibility. >> that is something to wrap your head around. jackie pepper from pepperonsports.com. >> thank. have a great one. >> you, too. yeah, this is pretty good.

45 minutes past the hour. the white house is meeting to discuss the developing hostage situation in algeria. algeria state media says four hostages have been freed by the algerian military following an islamic military attack on a gas field. there is an operation going on but details are so unclear. the fate of the american hostages are still unknown.

senator bill nelson is joining the python challenge today. nelson has been out spoken on the issue of the gigantic reptiles and at one point brought some skin to a committee hearing. experts are either shooting or decan cap stating the exotic snakes. vice president joe biden is set to speak in washington at the u.s. mayor conference. gun control will be on agenda. i spoke with mayor michael nutter. he wasn't happy about the criticism of president obama. >> for those of us in the political business, generally it's been pretty much an unwritten but understood rule that family and children are out of bounds, that you don't attack

someones family. if you want to attack the candidate or the elected official, certainly that is your prerogative. generally family is considered off limits and that ad doesn't add anything to legitimate dialogue. the theater in arourora, cowe colorado is reopening tonight. it's a way to help the community move forward. i talked with a victim earlier this week. >> they didn't contact just directly, they went through another organization to invite us and the family -- we got together and chatted about it and decided that it wasn't appropriate for us to attend. >> and you also suggested that

other family of victims and other victims boycott this special evening. >> yeah. we talked a little bit to some of the other families and agreed with them that this was not really the best way to handle the situation. >> all right. i'm joined now on the phone by cnn's jim spellman. he's in aurora today. what exactly is on tap? >> well, yesterday and today they allowed family members to come and tour the theater. they did renovations in there. they haven't let the press in. we don't know what kind of changes they made. they renamed theater 9 and named it theater h. beyond that, we don't know how they changed it. the city had a poll in the fall asking people what they wanted done with the theater. overwhelmingly, people said reopen it.

this is a commercial place. this is is not something like a school where there is a community around it and they say it's inappropriate to be reopening. they feel they are just in it for the money. so it will be interesting to see how many people actually show up for this and going forward what the interest level is. carol, i spoke with somebody who is -- they call themselves james holmes' fans and some of them think he's not guilty or they just support him and they put a rally around him on facebook. some of them plan ongoing as soon as this is reopened to the public and for family members, this is disturbing to have people there where their loved ones dies. >> it's more than disturbing. it's actually kind of sick. what movies are they going to show? it makes you wonder which they will choose. >> yeah. they haven't told us what movie they are going to show. they haven't told us if it will become a regular theater.
